After 24 years of sales experience with a telephone company, Hugh Dunn was confident if he took early retirement he would easily find a comparable job.
So he did. But he couldn’t.
Dunn took his early-out package in 1994 from BellSouth in Jacksonville, where he was a branch manager for major accounts. But it was four years before he found the right job and another five years before Dunn’s salary reached the same level it was at while he worked for BellSouth.
Like many job hunters, Dunn found that finding a well-paying job in Jacksonville wasn’t as easy as it looked. Sure, the city has plenty of jobs, but for workers seeking middle- and upper-management positions, the pickings are slim.
